What you should know when choosing and eating mussels:
Manila clams are probably less hard and soft shells found in the shell market, so it is a favorite of many professional chefs.
Accidental arrivals from Japan in the 1920s, Manila clams are easily recognizable by their small and pretty shells. They have large, deep color bands and a finely ribbed shell that makes them distinctive. And while Manila clams can 7-10 years and up to eight inches in diameter live, most are sold at 3-4 years and less than 3 cm in diameter.
Mussels live in the wild, near the Pacific littleneck, not to be confused with littleneck clam East. Also, do not mix different types of mussels in the shell, unless they are cooked separately - Manila clams need about 3-5 minutes in open steam, while yellow Pacific requires 10-12 minutes.
Manila clams are widely - and sustainable - Agriculture in the Pacific Northwest, especially in Washington state and British Columbia. Unlike other species of fish, shellfish poses a threat to the environment because the delicious mussels are hatched in pens and live their lives in nature.
From the point of view of the kitchen, most of the mussels are steamed. Of course you can eat in the shell, but few people do it for a reason: so you have a sweet taste like clams East we eat in the shell, Manila clams, although they are less salty.
Manila conventionally used in pastas and soups.
Manila with a kind of salted meat such as bacon, bacon, sausage or something else, salty and Porky Pig is paired. And if you want to mix with other seafood, try the crab, Pacific Ocean perch or flounder. For what? The three mussels eat Manila in nature, and they have a connection on the board, because to share it.
And the bottom line? Manila clams not break the bank. Usually a dozen sold pounds and is a main part of a healthy person. Personally? I can eat dozens, and it is always better to have too much than too little, so I usually buy a dozen for each person, and an extra dozen case.
Just a note: the mussels that have not opened their shell after steaming is discarded. Probably died before possible and make you sick if you eat them.
